　　In the early late 1970's,retrievals from the Coastal Zone Color Scanner(CZCS),an experimental instrument that flew on the Nimbus 7 satellite,proved it was possible to estimate upper ocean chlorophyll aconcentrations from space based measurements of water leaving radiances.
