The therapeutic efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the treatment of cardiovascular disease is increasingly attributed to their paracrine secretion.Consistent with these observations, my lab has recently demonstrated that administration of culture medium conditioned by MSCs derived from human ESCs into a pig and mouse models of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury reduced infarct size by ~60% and ~50%, respectively.Size fractionation of the conditioned medium (CM) suggested that the active cardioprotective factor was a ~50-100 ηm complex.
