Mass customization is the buzzword of the current decade.To stay competitive,many manufacturers have to adapt their business models to be compatible with mass customization,which enables products customized to match customers unique needs.Knowledge-based configuration is playing important role in the Innovation.As a consequence of evolution,the configuration model has to evolve in parallel with its referents in the world.However,the great variety and complexity of configurable products is currently seen as a main challenge for knowledge-based configuration during the process of evolvement from EBOM to MBOM.A side effect of using configuration models for describing different and evolving products in one model is an increasing possibility for errors.Keeping an overview of the hundreds or thousands of configurable components and the increasing number of interrelations and restrictions for combinations of those is hard,if not impossible,without methodological support and tool support.So,it is very significant to research an innovative approach to modeling and solving an engineering product configuration problem based on the constraint satisfaction paradigm.In this paper,we describe the current situation in the research area of configuration,This paper focus on the optimization of product configuration in the new environment of complex product development and manufacture (for example,automotive,motorcycle,etc.) through building the model of product family based on the typical clustered structure of the constraint graph.The methodology (consisting of rules-based configuration,constraint-baaed configuration and procedure-based configuration) is discussed,which represents functionaiity and variability provided by defining constraint and rule between parts of product.A Variant configurator is introduced,Which support "Configure-to-Order" and use a programming paradigm known widely as the production rules,to provide dynamic and runtime decision-making that are essential for obtaining a valid configuration.The interactive configurator based on embedded product definitions (consisting of mathematical formulae,design parameters,constraints,safety requirements,etc.),it generates custom-engineered products automatically to meet ERP needs.
