Objects: To probe into the surgical approach and clinical outcome of repairing obsolete calcaneal tendon rupture and defects with tissueengineering tendons. Methods The study group consisted of 7 patients, who were performed repairing surgeries with tissueengineering tendons for calcaneal tendon rupture and defects between August, 1999 and June, 2002. After follow-up and analysing surgical procedure, the announcements and clinical outcome were concluded. The tissueengineering tendons were made by tendon cells derived from 5-month old fetus, which were cultivated and then stuck on the surface of 0# absorbable sutures in tisuueengineering lab. The defects were repaired by suturing repeatedly with tissueengineering tendons. Meanwhile, the defects were covered by gastrocnemius fascial flap for protection and strengthening. After surgery, ankle joints were fixed with plaster for 4~6 weeks, then exercised. Results:The period of follow-up was 22~56 months (mean, 46.9 months). Excellent repairing outcome was achieved in all cases, only one patient had skin delayed union for 1 month, and no complication happened. All patients were assessed with Yin Qingshui outcome evaluation. 5 cases in all reached excellent, 1 good, 1 average, and no bad. The total rate of excellent and good was 85.71%.Conclusion repairing obsolete rupture and defects of calcaneal tendon with tissueengineering tendons has achieved good clinical outcome, which avoids many defects of other means, so, it costs more studies and applications.
