Preparing single grain YBCO from very fine starting powders have been considered an effective way to improve the critical current density and the trapped field of bulk superconductors. However, bulk superconducting samples growing form nano-Y2O3 starting powders by typical TSMG (top seeding melt growth) method exhibit macroscopic cracks and spontaneous nucleation which could reduce significantly their mechanical and magnetic properties.A modified TSMG method with a pre-treatment of the starting powders is developed to reduce the macroscopic cracks and to suppress the spontaneous nucleation. The influences of Pt and CeO2 doping on the growth and superconducting properties are also investigated in detail.
