Selenium supplementation decreases incidence of cancer, whereas its deficiency has been shown to be associated with increased incidence of this disease, particularly of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).One of the hypothetical mechanisms of protection by selenium is based on its function as an active centre of antioxidative enzymes glutathione peroxidises which remove peroxides of lipids as well as hydrogen peroxide thus preventing propagation of lipid peroxidation chain reaction.Oxidative stress dependent transcription is one of the regulation mechanisms for proangiogenic cytokines as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin-8 (IL-8) as well as osteopontin.
