Reliability assessment involves identifying the boundaries of the failure domain in the design space.Identifying the boundaries of failure domain is a challenge in highly non-linear structural problems because they exhibit discontinuities in responses due to small variations in the design variables leading to disjoint or island failure zones. This hinders the direct application of gradient based or response surface based optimization. In the past, researchers have identified boundaries using computational geometry techniques such as convex hull or alpha shapes. The former usually requires the number of clusters as input while the latter is a non-parametric approach but scalability is an issue for higher dimensions because of the non-availability of the data structure. However, algorithms for convex hull is well developed even for higher dimensions.
