Studies were conducted to determine the cause of the high level mortalities of cultured half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis).Gross signs of disease included loss of appetite, erratic swimming, and haemorrhages at the head, opercula and base of fin, rot of dorsal fin, swelling of the abdomen filled with ascitic fluid, and exposure of intestine tube outside of anus.Histological examination of the liver showed focal areas of necrosis and extensive haemorrhaging.Virtually pure dense cultures were obtained from liver, kidney, spleen tissues, and strong pathogenicity of the isolates to tongue sole was confirmed.
