Plasmodiophora brassicae Wor.,the causal agent of Clubroot disease,has rapidly spread out over the past 10 years in China,and become one of the most serious problems for Brassica crops,especially in the major vegetable crops such as Chinese cabbage and major oil crops as canola.Breeding of resistant cultivars for those above mentioned crops is an effective approach to control clubroot disease.Understanding of genetic factors and biological mechanisms involved in clubroot resistance(CR)is the fundamental base for developing CR cultivars.In past years,a couple of single dominant genes,isolate-specific QTLs,and epistatic QTLs involving in clubroot resistance in Brassica rapa were identified from a collection of CR resources in our group.Subsequently,the CRb gene was fine mapped in a relative small region where several candidate genes were located.Functional analysis of CRb is ongoing via transformation of candidate genes into susceptible lines of Arabidopsis thaliana and canola,respectively.Additionally,to globally understand the defence mechanisms involved in clubroot resistance,genes differentially expressed in response to P.brassicae were analysed by massive parallel RNA-Seq of Chinese cabbage near-isogenic lines carrying clubroot resistant(CRb)and susceptible(crb)alleles.Genes related to pathogen-associated molecular pattern(PAMP)and effector-triggered immunity were revealed.Meanwhile,knowledges obtained from the above fundamental studies were applied to integrate CR loci into some elite lines of Chinese cabbage and canola based on marker-assisted selection.So far,several commercial CR cultivars of Chinese cabbage were released.
