A manganese dioxide (MnO2) coating was electrically deposited on carbon nanotubes (CNTs),prepared by floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition, from magnesium sulfate (MnSO4) aqueous solution. The microstructure and morphology of the MnO2 coating and the interface between the MnO2 layer and CNTs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).SEM images show the formation of a uniform MnO2 layer, about 6-micron in thickness on the CNTs.TEM observations coupled with electronic diffractions indicate the deposit consists of crystallized MnO2 with the grain size of 20 nm.The MnO2 coated CNT composite shows promising applications as electrode in electrochemical systems.
