Scorpion venom constitutes a vast library of neurotoxic peptides which can provide useful probes for exploring ion channels functions. It is estimated that more than 100,000 peptide toxins exist in 1500 distinct scorpion species, but only a very small portion (less than 0.02%) of these peptides has been identified.Peptides purification is still the most common way to study the components of crude venom.Current purification starts with gel filtration, followed by successive SCX, sometimes by fast protein liquid chromatography, and finally RPLC.However, this approach is strenuous, low efficiency, and not suitable for large-scale purification. For the discovery of novel potential toxic peptides, this requires first the development of techniques that allows for the purification of toxins from highly complex samples.
