Lysosomes are specialized membrane bound organelles that degrade macromolecular cargoes derived from endocytosis, phagocytosis or autophagy. The resulting catabolites are exported by membrane transporters on lysosomes for re-utilization in cellular metabolism.Over 50 human disorders have been identified due to dysfunctions of lysosomes, indicating important roles of lysosomes in cell homeostasis and animal development.
