Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been causally associated with lymphoid and epithelial malignancies, suggesting its primary tropisms for these two types of cells. The complement receptor type 2 (CR2) has been identified as the receptor mediating EBV infection of B lymphocytes for almost three decades. However, in the epithelial cells, there are no functional receptors identified so far.One of the key hurdles is the lack of efficient in vitro epithelial infection model.
