Breast cancer is the most common cancer in developed countries. In Singapore, age standardized rates (per 100,000/year) for breast cancer has risen almost three-fold from 20.0 to 58.5 per 100,000/year within the last 40 years. What are the factors behind this dramatic change? One possibility is the switch of diet from soy and vegetable based diet rich in plant estrogens like flavonoids to a high fat red meat diet. Our laboratory has shown that the prenylflavonoidicaritin, a phytoestrogen from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Epimedium (淫羊藿) exerted an unexpected suppressive effect on breast cancer cell proliferation and gene expression. It does this through destabilization activating AhR-signalling to destabilize ERα protein thereby restricting ERα-positive breast cancer cell tumor growth in animal.
