The microbial cell-wall O-antigenic polysaccharides are attractive targets for the development of carbohydrate based therapeutics, which is reflected in several reports in the recent past. For a detailed understanding of the pathogenic role of the O-antigens,several biological experiments are necessary demanding large quantities of oligosaccharides in hand.Since the natural source can not provide the required amount of oligosaccharides,it is essential to develop a concise enzymatic synthetic strategy for its preparation.Recently,Widmalm et al reported [1] the structure of a common oligosaccharide repeating unit corresponding to the O-polysaccharide of enteroinvasive Escherichia coli(EIEC) O152.
