The water budget is one of the most important presuppositions for restoration of returned grassland in the semi-arid region of China.Based on field observations and experiments,this study analyzed the water budget and dynamic changes of soil moisture in returned grassland of different years,then discussed the influence of farming and farm-retuming on water conservation capacity of soil.Results indicated that farming grassland could weaken the water conservation capacity of soil and increase the risk of water shortage and drought.In addition,our study also showed that,in the early period of the farm-returning,naturally recovered vegetations still did not have the same water conservation capacity as the vegetations of native grassland did,which lead to more soil water loss through transpiration and then higher risk of drought for returned grassland.Owing to the fact that the succession of returned grassland to native grassland is a long-time process,more researches are needed to concern this issue in the future.
