Extremely low phosphotungstic acid combined with precious-metal catalyst(Ru/C or Pt/C or Pd/C)was used for one-pot conversion of cellobiose and cellulose into polyols in presence of hydrogen.High yields of ethylene glycol(EG)and 1,2-propylene glycol(1,2-PG)were obtained over extremely low phosphotungstic acid combined with Ru/C catalyst,and Ru/C could be used many times without remarkable decrease of EG and 1,2-PG yields.Besides,the effect of reaction conditions such as reaction time,H2 pressure,etc on the conversion of cellobiose and the yield of polyols were studied in detail.The highest EG yield of 36.1%was attained at 503K and 5 Mpa H2 for 1h with Ru/C usage of 0.1 g in 0.02wt%phosphotungstic acid from cellobiose conversion.However,cellulose cannot be completely catalyzed conversion duo to its robust crystalline structure and insolubility in extremely low phosphotungstic acid.
