Understanding how inbreeding affects the population fitness is a major issue in insect ecology.Despite being a worldwide pest of many economically important cruciferous crops,the effects of inbreeding on diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella(L.)populations are currently unknown.Using age-stage-specific life tables,we quantify the inbreeding effects on fitness-related traits and demographic parameters of P.xylostella,a worldwide pest of crucifers.Egg hatching rate,survival and fecundity of the inbred lines were significantly lower than those of the outbred lines in each generation and tended to gradually decrease over the inbred generations.The inbred P.xylostella showed significantly decreasing demographic parameters including intrinsic rate of increase(r),net reproduction rate(R0),and finite increase rate(λ),and increasing generation time(T).This is the first study using a life table approach to quantify age-(daily)or stage-specific effects of inbreeding on the population fitness in insects.It reveals that the inbreeding effects vary with developmental stages of the tested species,and the fitness-related traits can be profoundly affected by the degree of inbreeding.Our work provides a foundation for further studies on molecular and genetic bases of the inbreeding depression for P.xylostella or other insects.
