Early-type galaxies(ETGs)are thought to be the final product of merging and accretion in a hierarchical Universe.These processes are imprinted in the motions of tracers such as stars and globular clusters(GCs).Recent deep,two-dimensional integral field unit(IFU)spectroscopy(ATLAS3D; Emsellem et al.2011)reveals that many early-type galaxies that do not appear to have disks,are actually supported by rotation(V/σ>1).However,their result is limited to~1Re.We will present a kinematic analysis of the GC system and diffuse stellar light of 4 intermediate luminosity ETGs in the Virgo Cluster based on Gemini/GMOS data.Our data for diffuse light data extend out to 2–3 Re and for GCs extend out to~7Re.We find that the two-dimensional velocity fields for these galaxies are all different despite the fact that these four galaxies are uniformly classified as “faster rotators” by ATLAS3D.The GCs are found to exhibit strong rotation,no rotation,and counter-rotation,the properties of which can change between the inner and outer regions.This difference shows the importance of wide-field kinematic studies,and suggests that the formation of the inner and outer regions of ETGs can be decoupled.
