For one-step methods,the ability to perform reliable integrations for extended time periods,at least for appropriate problem classes,depends on a number of attributes,such as time-symmetry and the symplectic property.In the case of general linear methods,the symplectic property has to be generalized to Gsymplecticity; and time-reversal symmetry takes on a rich and subtle meaning.Methods with these properties exist but there is an additional complication: there are likely to be parasitic terms which eventually,and inevitably,corrupt numerical results.
