The cellular-core structure with self-similar units has many desirable characteristics, such as low relative density, excellent performance of sound and thermal insulation, high strength to weight ratio, etc., which is widely used in the field of aviation, aerospace, chemical industry, building materials and environmental protection.The hierarchical cellular structures with self-similar structural units can exhibit significant strength to weight improvements over comparable non-hierarchical structures.Moreover, the hierarchy feature makes abundant failure modes to offer more choices for designers, which may have the promising applications in the performance-based and damage-reduction design of buildings and sandwich structures.
