被子植物有30多万种,对于人类生存和生态环境都具有极其重要的意义,被子植物各大类群之间的亲缘关系为各种研究提供了系统发育框架.近20年来,被子植物的系统发育研究有了大幅度进展,基本确定了各大类群,如单子叶(monocots)和真双子叶(eudicots)植物.并且大多数研究人员也认同无油樟目(Amborallales),睡莲目(Nymphaeales),和木兰藤目(Austrobaileyales)为被子植物最基部的三个类群.这三支的植物只约占被子植物物种总数的0.05%.
