Increased spatial confinement occurs at multiple stages during tumourigenesis, for instance in primary tumour tissues, due to their overcrowding with proliferating cells or during metastasis, when cancer cells circulate the vascular system through capillaries smaller than half their own size.Although spatial confinement is highly implicated in promoting tumour progression, its contributions to this process remain enigmatic.We used nanopatterning and strain engineering to create a versatile 3D cell assay platform that encapsulates single human cells inside transparent rolled-up microtubes of varying diameters to mimic cell division in vascular capillaries.
