Corrosion resistance of microarc oxidization film on magnesium alloy AZ31 modified by high-intensity

  The microarc oxidation (MAO) films on magnesium alloy AZ31 were modified by high-intensity2 pulsed ion beam (HIPIB) irradiation at ion current density of 200-350 A/cm2 with 1-10 shots.SEM observation revealed that a sealing top layer formed on the MAO films.The corrosion behaviors of the MAO films in 3.5 % NaCl solution were characterized by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization measurements.The MAO films modified by HIPIB irradiation presented a corrosion resistance superior to that of original MAO film.The noticeable improvement in the corrosion resistance of MAO film is attributed to the blocking effect of the sealing top layer formed by HIPIB irradiation that hinders the corrosion controlled by the diffusion process of electrolyte from the solution to the magneium alloy substrate through the MAO film.
