Graphene,a unique two-dimensional nanomaterial with excellent conductivity and mechanical properties, has been intensively investigated to assemble into the high-performance layered nanocomposites through some interface modification strategies, such as hydrogen bonding, ionic bridging,π-π interaction and covalent cross-linking.However,it still remain a challenge to enhance the tensile strength and toughness simultaneously through such single interface interaction, that's to say,the improved strength usually is at expense of decreasing toughness.Fortunately, natural nacre has provided the "gold standard" for strength and toughness, considering the delicate interface synergy within the "brick" and "motar" [1].Here,we successfully fabricated the strong, tough, conductive binary artificial nacre based on graphene oxide(as "brick")and chitosan(as "motar")through synergistic interaction of covalent and hydrogen bonding. The distinct mechanism for covalent cross-linking of graphene oxide with chitosan was also well demonstrated.Tensile strength and toughness was 4-and 10-times higher, respectively, than that of natural nacre. This bioinspired artificial nacre also exhibited high electrical conductivity, which has promising applications in aerospace, flexible supercapacitor electrodes, artificial muscle, and tissue engineering. The use of synergistic interactions is a strategy that opens a new avenue for development of high-performance,integrated,bioinspired nanocomposites.
