In two experiments,we explored the degree to which cross-linguistic semantic differences influence code switching by using sibling terms with a privileged status.In Experiment 1,participants’ code-switching reaction times and numbers of errors were recorded while they read Chinese/English sentences in which language switching,gender consistency and alternate language of Chinese/English stimuli were manipulated.A language switching × gender consistency interaction was found when sibling terms appeared either in English/Chinese sentences.Only language switching to a separate language took much more time to process than the language switching to the same language,particularly when a semantic component is involved.
