Comparative studies of captive primates and carnivores have shown a positive correlation between total white blood cell (WBC) counts and mating promiscuity, which has been interpreted to support the Sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) hypothesis. In the present study,we tested the generalization of this hypothesis in both captive and free-ranging rodents. We compiled a dataset for captive rodent species from the International Species Information System (ISIS) ,and conducted an exhaustive literature search to gather data for wild rodents.Using a phylogenetic comparative statistical approach,we found that total WBC count failed to co-vary with level of mating promiscuity (estimated by testes mass) in rodents. In addition, the number of neutrophils and lymphocytes significantly decreased with the level of promiscuity in free-ranging species and did not co-vary with mating promiscuity in captive ones.In summary, our study failed to generalize the STDs hypothesis to rodents. Moreover, the differences we found between captive and wild rodents question the validity of hypothesis based solely on captive mammals.
