Information on life-history traits is crucial for understanding rodent evolution,ecology and behavioral strategies.From 2000-2004,using monthly live trapping,we monitored sexual and seasonal cohort life-history traits for captive Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) held under semi-natural conditions in south-central Inner Mongolia.Captive-born gerbils (males 322,females 278) were divided into winter (C1) ,spring (C2) and summer (C3) cohorts,and overwintering cohorts (C0) (born before October of previous year) Average birth dates of gerbils varied significantly over the season,and most gerbils (47.3%) were born in spring.There were no strictly gender differences in body mass at first capture,observed longevity,size and age of maturity,or potential reproductive life span.Male biased dispersal was observed only after overwintering.A seasonal cohort effect was observed for longevity,maturity and reproductive life span.Age of first breeding in C1 females (6.0±1.1 months) was significantly earlier than in C2 (9.7±1.3months) and C3 (8.8±0.3 months) females.The average number of litters per breeding period was 2.3±0.3,1.1±0.6,0.2±0.1 and 0.0±0.0 times for C0 C1,C2 and C3,respectively.Moreover,in northern temperate regions,seasonality has both ecological and evolutionary consequences on small rodents life-history.We conclude that adaptation switching from fast to slow living in later born Mongolian gerbils proved to be of more importance in shaping seasonal-specific life-history traits.
