Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is a cyclic heptapeptide toxin produced by cyanobacteria, it inhibits protein phosphatases PP1 and PP2A exclusively.It has been reported that MC-LR has a bimodal effect on cells.Apoptosis is generally only reported at high doses of MC-LR both in vivo and in vitro, whereas potent tumour-promoting activity is observed at lower concentrations and the liver is the major target organ for microcystin-induced toxicity.
