In the 1920s,methylglyoxal,a keto-aldehyde was widely held as one of the key intermediates of glucose breakdown.But with the elucidation of Embden-Meyerhoffpathway of glycolysis,this idea was rejected.However,in the 1980s the metabolic pathway of the "enigmatic ketoaldehyde",methylglyoxal has been firmly established and was put into the biochemical map of intermediary metabolism.A battery of enzymes many of which are novel in nature,have been fully characterized to demonstrate synthesis and breakdown of methylglyoxal from and to known metabolites.In the early 1990 s,after establishing the metabolic pathway of methylglyoxal in a mammalian system,Dr.Manju Ray embarked on studying the anticancer effect of methylglyoxal.It had been found that methylglyoxal inhibits both glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration of exclusively malignant cells.As a result of inhibition of these vital energy (ATP)-generating processes,malignant cells become nonviable.
