Grain boundary precipitation of Mg-Si phases in 6xxx materials is known to decrease the strength of grain boundaries leading to a transition from transgranlar to intergranular failure. The extent of grain boundary precipitation depends on the cooling rate after extrusion or solution treatment which in turn has an important influence on the formability and ductility. This work focused on a low Mn containing variant of AA6082 which was DC cast and extruded to form 3 mm x 42 mm strips at a temperature of 500℃ and a ram speed of 8 mm/s.
