  Expansins are a group of cell wall-loosening proteins, which are encoded by a superfamily of genes.Many studies have proven that expansins take part in diverse aspects of plant growth and development, such as cell wall extension, root hair formation, root development, floral organ development, fruit softening, abscission, symbiosis and responses to abiotic stress.Plant expansins can be divided into four protein subfamilies, including-expansins (EXPAs),-expansins (EXPBs), expansin-like A (EXLA) and expansin like B (EXLB) proteins.The sequencing of the soybean genome made it is possible to identify and isolate all members of the expansin family in soybean.By blast searching in soybean genome, we found that there were 52, 9, 2 and 4 members in EXPAs, EXPBs, EXLA and EXLB subfamilies, respectively.Our previous works proved that a member from soybean EXPBs subfamily, GmEXPB2, was intrinsically involved in the responses of root system architecture to abiotic stresses.
