Salt lakes in the Qaidam Basin,China are widely distributed. The composition of salt lake brines belongs to the magnesium sulfate sub-type,and it can be summarized to the complex seven-component system of salt water(Li+,Na+,K+,Mg2+//Cl-,SO4 2-,borate-H2O)[1].However,the phenomena of super-saturation of brines containing sulphates and borates are often found both in natural salt lakes and solar ponds [2,3].In order to separate and utilize the mixture salts effectively by salt-field engineering or solar ponds in the Qaidam Basin, the thermodynamic properties of the salt lake brines and the stable and metastable phase equilibria of the salt-water systems were studied systematically using the methods of micro-calorimeter and isothermal dissolution and isothermal evaporation at resent years [4-12].In this presentation, three aspects will be introduced. The first is the solubility database on the slat-water systems established with 20,000 aqueous and near-aqueous systems from binary to six-component system since 1910.The second part is a series of temperature-dependent equations of Pitzer parameters(the single slat ion-interaction parameters and the mixing ion-interaction parameters)on the borate-free salt-water system of(Li+,Na+,K+,Mg2+//Cl-,SO4 2--H2O).The second part is the thermodynamic properties of some borates studied in our laboratory with the method of micro-calorimeter.
