This study was designed to investigate anti-arrhythmic effect of chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) in fructose-induced.metabolic syndrome (MetS) rats.Sprague-Dawley rats were subject to treatment with fructose (10% fructose in drinking water for 6 wks), CIHH (simulated 5000 m altitude, 6 hours per day for 6 wks), and CIHH plus fructose.Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) arrhythmia was induced by coronary ligation, and action potential (AP) in papillary muscle was recorded by intra-cellular recording technique.MetS rats displayed a severe arrhythmia that was effectively prevented by CIHH treatnent. Also, CIHH prolonged AP duration (APD)under normal condition and antagonized the inhibition of AP during I/R.CIHH confers protective effect against 1/R-induced arrhythmia in the MetS rats, which might be related to the prolongation of APD and prevention of AP inhibition by I/R.
