This paper integrates three technology dimension as embeddedness factors of M&A target selection at the dyadic level.Relative technological attributes such as similarity, complementarity and crowding are considered when referring to one technological position in relation to others. We gathered data related to patent activity in U.S.biopharmaceutical industry.Using both patent class and citation approach, we found that the evidence supported the prediction that firms are likely to select acquisition targets in the technological contexts of embeddedness. We further offered an elaborate illustration of these three dimensions with distinction in conception and layers. To our knowledge, this is the first research to consolidate and examine the three typical factors with a holistic viewpoint.By systematically dimensionalizing technology relations, we contribute both to embeddedness, patent analysis, and M&A studies.
