Indolo[2,1-α isoquinoline is one of the most attractive frameworks with a wide range of biological and pharmacological activities(Figure 1).1 Herein,we described a visible-light induced formal [4+1] annulation between N-aryl tetrahydroisoquinolines and diazo compounds.2 This reaction allows the assembly of biologically important indolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines with a wide range of functional groups via the cleavage of four C-H bonds,including two sp3 C-H and one sp2 C-H bonds,under mild and metal-free conditions.
