The sulfur in thiophene-based compounds such as thiophene (T), benzothiophene (BT) and dibenzothiophene (DBT), is usually difficult to remove from gaosline and diesel fractions, even by the use of the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) technology.The difficulty lies mainly in the relatively large molecule size of the thiophene-based compounds, which normally leads to strong internal diffusion resistance.For example, the effect of the internal diffusion is significant on the overall HDS rate of thiophene for a commercial catalyst with a mesoporous structure [1,2].Therefore, how to increase the diffusion of species from the outer surface of the catalyst to the active sites on the inner surface is a challenge for the development of new HDS catalysts.In this work, a series of HDS catalysts supported on hierarchically macro-/mesoporous structured Al2O3 is prepared and applied to the HDS of T, BT and DBT, showing improved HDS activities by comparison with commercial or home-made catalysts without macroporous channels.
