The formation of globular clusters(GCs)and its relationship to galactic field star formation is still unclear.Previous work with the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey(ACSVCS)showed that early-type dwarf galaxies(dEs; Mz>-19)that are located closer to the cluster center,and thus in the denser environments,have higher specific frequencies of GCs(SN; the number of GCs per unit stellar luminosity)than those in the cluster outskirts.Semi-analytic models of galaxy formation also suggest that dwarf galaxies in the inner and denser regions of a galaxy cluster have had higher star formation rate densities at earlier stages than those in the outer regions.These results imply that the formation of both GCs and field stars are influenced by environment,and that one can trace the other.We study this link using the alpha-element abundances([α/Fe])of the host dwarf galaxies as a measure of the intensity of early star formation.Using the Gemini/GMOS-IFU,we have derived [α/Fe] for 11 dwarf elliptical galaxies with a full range of SN and clustercentric distance in the Virgo Cluster.We find that the [α/Fe] of the galactic field stars are highest(indicating the most intense star formation)at the cluster center.Moreover,we find a correlation between [α/Fe] and globular cluster specific frequency,showing a direct link between the efficiency of massive star cluster formation and the early star formation intensity in their host galaxies.
