Immunological memory has evolved to protect us and adapt our immune system to recurrent pathogens of the environment. However, in inflammatory rheumatic diseases, an immunological memory for persistent and autoantigens probably can drive chronic inflammation. Also many tumor cells apparently induce a chronic inflammation which is probably even protecting them.Understanding the cells and mechanisms driving chronicity in inflammation is thus prerequisite to design novel therapies terminating chronic inflammation.
