铁还原菌和铁氧化菌介导的铁循环过程，与碳、氮循环相耦合，在滨海河口过渡带生物地球化学循环过程中起着至关重要的作用。已报道的铁还原菌和铁氧化菌主要属于Proteobacteria、Firmicutes和Bacteroidetes等门，受盐度、酸碱条件、温度、植被轮作等生态环境条件的制约，在属水平上以不同群落结构的形式分布于湖泊、河流、海洋、温泉、湿地、沼泽、盐湖和稻田等生态系统。
