铁是湿地环境中具有氧化还原活性的主要元素之一，铁循环与土壤有机物的矿化、硝化、反硝化、甲烷产生、重金属迁移转化等环境过程密切相关。在热力学上，铁还原菌介导的铁还原过程比产甲烷过程更容易发生，因而能够抑制甲烷的产生，减少湿地温室气体的排放。

铁还原菌和铁氧化菌介导的铁循环过程，与碳、氮循环相耦合，在滨海河口过渡带生物地球化学循环过程中起着至关重要的作用。已报道的铁还原菌和铁氧化菌主要属于Proteobacteria、Firmicutes和Bacteroidetes等门，受盐度、酸碱条件、温度、植被轮作等生态环境条件的制约，在属水平上以不同群落结构的形式分布于湖泊、河流、海洋、温泉、湿地、沼泽、盐湖和稻田等生态系统。
