Cotton fiber is one of the most common and widely distributed cellulose with the excellent properties,especially good air permeability,comfortableness and softness.1 Cotton fiber is extremely flammable and its limit oxygen index(LOI)value is only 18.0%.2It is very urgent to research flame retardants that can be applied to cotton fabrics.In current work,the renewable mannitol is employed to synthesize formaldehyde-free,halogen-free,renewable and low-cost flame retardant an ammonium salt of mannitol hexaphosphate acid ester(AMHPE)in free-solvent condition.By generating new P_O_C covalent bonds between cotton and AMHPE endow the fire resistance and durability for cotton fiber.The LOI value of cotton treated with 30%AMHPE reaches 42.3%.No continuous flame was observed in the vertical fammability test.
