When plane-strain rings, cylindrical shells and spherical shells are subjected to internal uniform radial pressure pulse, the dynamic unstable vibration, which is caused by nonlinear modal coupling,may happen in the rings and shells.In this study, the simulation results on studying the dynamic unstable vibration in tings and shells are presented.It is shown that after several vibration cycles of the membrane breathing mode response, some selected bending modes may be excited, during which the nonlinear modal coupling between the breathing mode and bending modes may lead to the dynamic unstable vibration in rings and shells.The influencing factors and controlling methods on the dynamic unstable vibration are also investigated.The present study may explain the observed strain growth phenomenon in explosion containment vessels (ECVs) and provide the guidelines on the safe design of ECVs.
