The plasticity of the synapses makes the brain a highly adaptable organ.The strength of a synapse can be changed by agents such as nerve growth factors and neurotransmitters.When these signals impinge on cells, they have their physiological and pathophysiological effects elicited through a network of biological, chemical and molecular mechanisms such receptor-ligand intereactions, phosphorylation and de-phosphorylation of proteins, the complexities of which are only now beginning to be appreciated.My presentation will include my studies on the following areas of my research: 1.Abnormal phosphorylation of Tau protein from Alzheimer Disease brains (AD) through measurement of Pico mole levels of non-radioactive phosphoamino acids from normal and AD tau protein.2.Significance of changes in the binding of ligands to serotonergic, nicotinic and dopaminergic receptors to different brain regions from normal, AD, and schizophrenic brains.
