Residual stresses introduced by fabrication process especially welding process can cause distortion and reduced the ultimate strength of welded structure.Non homogeneous heat distribution during welding process was the most significant factor influencing performance of welded structures. Therefore,it is crucial to investigate the distribution and magnitudes of welding residual stress.Due to its excellent flexibility of neutron diffraction, the residual stress measurements on different samples are carried out through it.In this study, the residual stress distribution in two pairs of China low activation martensitic(CLAM)steel butt-welding have been measured using time-of-flight neutron diffraction. One is welded without restraint along the welding line, and the other is welded by similar welding specification, but the tested weld in middle is got under restraint. This measurement approach is illustrated using a positioning system in use on the ENGIN-X instrument at the UK ISIS pulsed neutron source comprising a traditional table augmented with a triple axis manipulator. Results show that residual stresses with high magnitudes were developed in the weld seam and HAZ in three directions particularly for the second case which was affected by the restraint condition.
