Objective: To identify epidemiological characteristics of suicide risk among middle school students in Fuyang city, Zhejiang Province.Methods: Using stratified cluster sampling, 1449 students from junior and senior high schools, and vocational high schools were recruited.Suicide risk factors were investigated by the self-developed questionnaire for general information.Suicide risk was assessed by five questions.The answer "yes" was regarded as positive response.Results: The prevalence rates of 12 months suicidal ideation was 13.2%, 12 months suicidal plan 3.4%, 12 months suicidal behaviours 1.2%, lifetime suicidal plan 6.1% and lifetime suicidal behaviours 2.4% among these students.The prevalence rates of 12 months suicidal plan in Senior high school students was significant higher than in junior high school students (5.0% vs.1.9% X2 =12.27 P=0.02).Compare urban students with rural students, the incidence of 12 months suicidal ideation (32.6% vs.7.2% X2=143.4 P< 0.01) , 12 months suicidal behaviour (3.7% vs.0.5% X2=25.32 P<0.01) , lifetime suicidal plan (11.2% vs.4.6% X2 =25.77 P<0.01) were significantly different.Conclusion: Suicide risks are common in high school students of Fuyang, especially in urban students.Influence factors and effective coping strategies should be deserved further study.Funding: The study is supported by China Collaborative Suicide Research and Training (NIH Fogarty Grant D43 TW007273) Attachment: five questions for suicide risk Do you ever have a plan to kill yourself?
