In this article, Yb and Er doped hexagonal phase NaGdF4 nanocrystals have been successfully combined with the graphene oxide (GO) via a facile one-step precipitation method with Na2EDTA as chelating agent at hot water (90℃). Obtained samples are systematically characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman Spectroscopy (Raman). The results show that fusiform hexagonal phase NaGdF4: Yb, Er nanoparticles are attached on the surface of GO substrate. Under the 980 nm laser excitation, the upconversion luminescence is not detected in the as-prepared samples, however, after the annealing at 500℃ for 4 hours, the nanocomposite show visible green upconversion emission due to the reduction of GO sheets and the bigger size of annealed NaGdF4: Yb, Er nanoparticles. The near-infrared photothermal conversion efficiency of nanocomposite is measured by temperature ascending experiment. Obtained nanocomposite dispersion (0.5 g/L) was loaded into a beaker and exposed to a NIR laser (980 nm). Heat input into the system by energy transfer from nanocomposite equals heat dissipation at thermal equilibrium. The transducing efficiency was then determined by plotting temperature increase as a function of laser power extinction. The results indicated that the photothermal conversion efficiency of nanocomposite without anneal are higher than annealed nanocomposite. The current work paves the way for GO based upconversion nanocomposites potential application in photothermal therapy.
