Conversational Implicature in the Movie Gone with the Wind

　　By analyzing the conversations in the movie Gone with the Wind from the view of conversational implicature, this paper elaborates on how the characters violate the Cooperative Principle in their conversations, thus the conversational implicature is generated.Cooperative Principle is indicated by means of four conversational maxims: maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance and maxim of manner.People are supposed to observe these maxims to converse in a maximally efficient, rational and cooperative way:they should speak sincerely, relevantly and clearly, while providing sufficient information.If all the maxims are observed, the conversation will generate no implicature.But in the movie Gone with the Wind the main characters in some important conversations violate the four maxims, producing strong connotations.The unexpected and meaningful responses and questions in the their conversations are highly effective in the shaping of the personality of the main characters and the plot-development of the story.
