Surfaces provide platforms for self-assembly of well-defined molecular structures.Byadjusting the balance of molecular-molecular interactions and molecule-surface interactions,diverse molecular patterns can be created [1,2].Beyond molecular self-assembly,“on-surfacecovalent coupling” or “on-surface reaction” under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditionsbecame a new concept in the very recent years to create robust,ordered molecular surfacestructures that may also exhibit novel properties.Some products are not possible to besynthesized by standard reactions in solutions because of high reaction barrier or lowsolubility.Important breakthroughs in the this area give a clear signal for the opening of a newavenue in realizing robust functionalized molecular surfaces and designing new catalysts forunusual chemical reactions [3]
