Little is known about the mechanistic explanation of the immune system that allow a bony fish to survive when challenged by a fatal pathogen.Here,10,510 ESTs from a fatal Vibrio alginolyticus-challenged orange-spotted grouper (Osg) have been sequenced, and 141 genes were identified as relating to host defence.Osg that survived pathogen challenge showed upregulated gene expression of IL-1,IL-6,and IL-8,revealing that an inflammatory response had played a vital role in host defence.
